The ACHPER QLD Masterclass series has been designed to offer Health teachers a deep dive into the content areas covered in the senior Health syllabus.

SESSION ONE: 9.00am to 10.30am

 

Promoting Resilience, School Belonging and Positive Mental Health for Adolescents

Presenter: Ian Shochet, Queensland University of Technology


This presentation will discuss our core finding from over 27 years of research of our strength-based approach to promoting resilience and wellbeing in adolescents. I will talk about our conceptual model of resilience and how it has been applied to promote the optimal protective factors. Exemplars will be provided from our Resourceful Adolescent Program (RAP) of the key protective factors that can be promoted at the adolescent (RAP-A), Parent/Caregiver (RAP-P) and Teacher levels (RAP-T). I will discuss in particular the vital role of school belonging.

Salutogenesis: aligning theory and practice in Senior Health

Presenter: Louise McCuaig, Matthew Flinders Anglican College


Drawing on the rich experience of Senior Health teachers, this session will focus on ensuring that teachers' understanding and use of salutogenic theory reflects a robust translation and alignment of the core tenets and principles of this theoretical approach to health. Participants in this session will engage with a suite of tasks that seeks to establish:

  1. Core and critical features of salutogenic theory
  2. Individual and collective understanding of robust translations of salutogenic theory into Senior Health Education learning experiences and units of work
  3. Mechanisms to ensure that middle years units of work provide an effective preparation for students' engagement in Senior Health studies.

Myth Busters
Presenters: Carly Valente, Moreton Bay College and Jenna McKnight, Marist College, Ashgrove

We will aim to debunk common myths and misconceptions that often cloud our understanding in Health. In unravelling these misconceptions, we will provide you with accurate information, enhancing the teaching and learning experience, and fostering a more profound knowledge base.

Presenters

Ian Shochet
Ian is a Professor of Clinical Psychology at QUT. He has an international reputation in resilience research, developing nationally and internationally recognised interventions that promote resilience.  His research on school-based approaches to promoting resilience and preventing depression in young people represented the world’s first successful trial in this area, cementing his position as a pioneer in this field.

Dr Louise McCuaig
Dr Louise McCuaig currently serves as Head of Flinders Discovery Institute at Matthew Flinders Anglican College. For over 30 years, she has been an educator in Queensland schools and universities. Louise’s research on health literacy and salutogenesis underpinned the development of the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education and Queensland Senior Health Syllabus.

Carly Valente
Carly is a highly experienced HPE teacher with a passion for health. Carly has previously presented at numerous ACHPER QLD State Conferences and has undertaken various Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) Senior Health specific roles including Health Syllabus Writer. 

Jenna McKnight
Jenna is an experienced HPE teacher who was the 2021 ACHPER QLD Health Impact Award winner.  She is heavily involved in all of the QCAA Assessor roles as a Lead Confirmer, Endorser and Marker. It is through participating in these roles, that she has been able to share key learnings with her students and at ACHPER conferences.
