2012 North Queensland Conference

The North Queensland Conference is a 2 day Professional Development Conference designed specifically for HPE Teachers and industry professionals. The conference will be held in Townsville.

Shane Pill to present exclusively to Conference Delegates

ACHPER QLD are pleased to present this exclusive opportunity for Health & Physical Education conference attendees to attend a special once only coaching session with Shane Pill.

Shane is the author of the Play with Purpose book which focuses on practical ideas and activities that keep the fun in learning while emphasising understanding the game. As a sought after expert in in Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) and Games Sense approaches to coaching, Shane has recently presented at the AFL National Coaching Conference and has delivered many hands on workshops for coaches and teachers from community level to national level coaches. The Game Centred approach uses games as a learning tool to increase the motivation of players and develop tactical and strategic thinking as well as skill development.

The ACHPER QLD Health & Physical Education Conference is on Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 July, all attendees at the HPE Conference will receive an exclusive complimentary registration to this not to be missed 3 hour practical and theory based workshop on Sunday 10 July.

With keynote speakers acclaimed author and speaker, Shane Pill, presenting using the "Play with Purpose" methodology and Komla Tsey, renowned research presenting on Wellbeing in Schools, the conference is not to be missed. Keynote Speaker Announced

Shane Pill

In twenty years of teaching Shane was a HPE Head of Department, Sport, Year Level and House Coordinator, Assistant and Deputy Principal in schools in Perth and Adelaide. He now lectures in Physical Education and Curriculum Studies at Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia. He is the current President of ACHPER(SA) , and a former ACHPER Australia Board member.

Shane is currently completing his Phd, ‘Rethinking sport teaching in physical education’. Shane is a researcher in the ‘pedagogue tradition’ concerned with the improvement of teaching through the shared accumulated wisdom of teachers, with a particular focus on TGfU/Game Sense and Sport Education for enhanced learning in physical education and sport settings. Shane has presented over 60 sessions at schools and conferences since 2002, including the AFL National Coaching Conference (2010), the 1st National Primary Years Conference (2009), Tasmanian HPE Conference (2009) and Creating Active Futures Conference (Brisbane, 2009).

Shane is author of the popular game-centred teaching text, Play with Purpose, he was a co-author of S’Cool cricket, and a co-editor of Pick up & run V3, Active children, and Health and Physical Education Teaching and Learning Guides: Early Years – Senior Years teaching resources. His paper Physical Education – what’s in a name? is currently used by the International Baccalaureate in the professional development of physical educating teachers. Shane’s work can be found on his website Sport Literacy, and he has recently began exploring the potential of Twitter for ongoing professional learning (Twitter shaneapill).

Professor Komla Tsey to Present

Professor Komla Tsey is a highly qualified research professor with more than 25 years experience undertaking specialised research and development. Komla was Head of the Central Australian Unit Menzies School of Health Research (1995-99) and contributed significantly towards the setting up of Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal Health (now Lowitja Institute) and was one of the CRC’s 5 inaugural Research Program Leaders. Over the past decade, Komla has led a research team at JCU and The University of Queensland to operationalise and build research evidence-base for Aboriginal-developed community empowerment programs.

He is an expert in leading diverse research programs into politically sensitive and contemporary health, education, welfare and other social issues concerning Australia’s Indigenous and rural Ghanaian communities and beyond. He utilises original and collaborative empowerment and participatory approaches to improving understanding of social circumstances and the relationship between these and government policies, thereby improving and sustaining health and wellbeing in population subsets.

Komla has attracted more than $10M in National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) funding alone mainly as Chief/Co Investigator; produced over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and commissioned research reports; given over 100 presentations including local, national and international invited and key notes. His research contributions are widely recognised through several awards including: AJ Thompson Award for Good Practice in Public Health 1994 by the Public Health Association of Australia and the prestigious Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Population Health Research Career Development Award 2005.
